o2h Discovery has reached a new milestone with 50 biotech companies supported through the o2h Kickstarter Award, helping emerging companies access drug discovery expertise, generate scientific data and progress towards their next development milestone.

Launched in 2022, the o2h Kickstarter Award was created to support early-stage biotech companies developing new therapeutic ideas. Since its launch, the programme has supported companies across the UK, USA, Australia, Israel and Europe, through 8+ editions spanning markets including Japan and Italy.

The programme has also supported academic spinouts and university-linked ventures, with Kickstarter recipients connected with institutions including UCSF, Jefferson, the University of Glasgow and Monash University.

Supporting biotech through a challenging funding environment

The Kickstarter programme was established at a time when early-stage biotech companies were facing increasing challenges in securing the capital and resources needed to advance their programmes.

For emerging companies, reaching the next milestone often depends on generating the right scientific data while managing limited resources. The o2h Kickstarter Award is designed to help address this gap by providing selected companies with access to drug discovery capabilities and scientific support to help advance their programmes.

Where programmes progress, companies can continue working with o2h as their discovery requirements develop and scale, creating a pathway from early-stage support into broader discovery and development activities.

From small molecules to peptide therapeutics

The Kickstarter programme initially focused on small-molecule discovery and has since expanded to support peptide therapeutics through the o2h Kickstarter: Peptide edition.

This expansion reflects the growing range of therapeutic modalities being explored by emerging biotech companies and the need for flexible discovery capabilities at the early stages of development.

Through its integrated discovery platform, o2h can support programmes across areas including medicinal chemistry, peptide synthesis, (peptide drug discovery), PR&D and scale-up, biology and ADME/DMPK.

Expanding the Kickstarter network

As the programme grows, o2h is also working to expand access to Kickstarter Awards through partnerships with Tech Transfer Offices, incubators, accelerators and venture capital organisations.

The o2h Kickstarter Platinum Partner model enables selected organisations to help identify promising early-stage companies within their networks and provide access to Kickstarter Awards.

Nine organisations have already joined the Platinum Partner network, including Yale, Mercia Ventures and Milner Therapeutics, creating additional routes for emerging biotech companies to access discovery support.

The Kickstarter community is also being connected with the wider biotech ecosystem through o2h’s ChaiTime events. Companies from the current cohort will have opportunities to pitch and connect with investors, partners and the wider life-science community at upcoming events in Korea, Japan and Australia.

Continuing to back emerging biotech

Reaching 50 supported biotech companies represents an important milestone for the o2h Kickstarter Award, but the programme continues to evolve.

The focus remains on helping emerging therapeutic companies generate the data and discovery progress needed to reach their next milestone, and, where programmes advance, supporting them as their discovery and development requirements grow.

With 50 biotech companies now supported, o2h Discovery is continuing to work with emerging companies and ecosystem partners around the world to help move promising therapeutic ideas towards the next stage of discovery.
